We know many of you are waiting to adopt a Sand Wash Basin horse and want information. Your wait is almost over! The adoption will be an online event, and will run from October 24-31, starting and ending at 4:00 pm MT. Here is the link which will take you to the Wild Horse and Burro Online Corral, https://wildhorsesonline.blm.gov/ . The Online Corral photo gallery will be updated mid-October or before with available horses, and features photos and videos taken by SWAT volunteers . This event features all Sand Wash Basin geldings, approximately 250 in total, no mares will be offered at this time. Pickup location and dates will be confirmed, but likely will be in Florence, Colorado.
We will post a list of horses and their tag numbers here on our page by September 21st. We have been able to identify many of the horses from the Herd Management Area, the greys can be challenging but we continue to work through our photos. There were horses gathered from outside the Basin which we do not know, and we will simply list them as Off Range Unknown. If you are looking for a specific horse, you will need to decide for yourself if our identification of that horse is correct, we have done our best and we believe we are accurate.
The adoption includes geldings aged a year and older. It is difficult to estimate the age of a wild horse in captivity, it requires a good look into the horse’s mouth while it is contained in a chute. We have noticed some horses have been aged older than their actual age, their freeze brand and signalment key will reflect their inaccurate age. Our age for horses born in 2008 and later is the accurate age of the horse.

Please familiarize yourself with the process and requirements, and get your application submitted. Applications must be submitted by the Sunday prior to the adoption at the very latest, but you may want to go ahead and get that taken care of.

Qualified adopters must meet standard requirements for owning and caring for a wild horse and burro, including specific facility parameters and shelters to ensure the safety and health of the animals. In general, when adopting or purchasing an animal at an internet event, prospective adopters or purchasers should follow the steps outlined below.
1. Apply: Create an Online Corral Profile, complete an application, and submit on-line.
2. Bid: Once the BLM approves your application, you are eligible to adopt or purchase your very own wild horse or burro. You may bid on the number of animals you are approved to adopt or purchase. The individual animal page from the gallery will display purchase methods and the current bid information. You can increase the current bid from $5 to $250 with each new bid. You may raise your own bid at any time. Proxy bidding allows the system to bid for you. Proxy bidding will automatically raise your bid (by $5) up to your maximum, every time your high bid is challenged. Bidders can raise their maximum bid throughout the bidding process.
3. Finalize: Submit payment, select your preferred pick-up option, and finalize all Private Care and Maintenance Agreements or Bills of Sales within 4 calendar days.
4. Pick up: Pick up of your newly adopted or purchased wild horse or burro from the designated BLM location. Bring a valid photo identification card, such as a driver's license to the event. You do NOT have to accept the animal if the animal does not meet your expectations. There is no penalty for not taking the animal. If you decline the animal in person, you may request a credit towards a future adoption. The BLM will load your animal into an approved trailer, please bring a halter if you wish to have your animal haltered prior to bringing them home. We suggest you have the neck tag removed prior to taking your horse home.
5. Bring Home your Wild Horses and Burros: Unload your animal directly into your corral and shelter. Give your horse or burro time to adjust and become accustomed to their new surroundings.
