A photographers dream.
Would you walk one and a half miles in the snow, down a ravine, to see wild horses? Would you? Well, I would. Yes me, Cindy. I would walk miles to be near the wild horses. To feel them in my presence, to breathe them into my soul. And on this day, that long difficult walk, resulted in one of my best selling photographs; Kootenai.
Of course she was on our list, and her dam and sire were on the list as well, but we had a different plan for them, for they were to live on 100's of acres, running free, a replacement option from what they were used to, the home they were taken from. However, plans do not always work out, but in some cases, end up working out even better than imagined.
Lucinda Patten was looking for horses to love, and at the same time Kootenai and Mariah needed to be relocated. It was a match made in heaven. It was a heaven in which a rescued wild horse could only dream of, that we could have only dreamed of. The impeccable care given to these horses was the icing on the cake. We could not have had a better host property: a beautiful wild horse haven.
The two lived for months together, then friends joined them in January 2023. Their faithful leader from the Basin, Sundance (sire to Koots) and two other well deserving souls. We tried to reunite another stallion (Khalua) which was in their herd pre-round up, but we were quickly getting out bid. Then the bid became too high, we figured he would be safe, we let him go. We bid on two others with no bids. Amigo and Pepe. Soon after the event was over we learned the person who had been bidding on Khalua decided to passed on him. We started to wonder if it was all a ruse, as this happened to us with several other horses we were bidding on. Were we being sabotaged? Regardless, we now had given another deserving horse his spot. We immediately made a call to Pat Craig at the Wild Horse Refuge asking for help; he said yes and gave Khalua his next best freedom, and Banditas the peace of mind he would be at a amazing home forever.
One moment, one glance, one encounter, one memory, family connections, zero bids or that one image, was all it took for them to find themselves living a new freedom at the 2 X 2 Ranch with Lucinda Patten.
