Breaking News: Canon City holding facility closes.
What does this mean? It means Colorado no longer has a holding facility for the wild horse they round up. It also means the horses will now go to Wyoming or Utah to be processed once removed from any Colorado Herd Management area. The bigger problem, Colorado advocates will have a more difficult time keeping track of the ones we love after they are removed.
The Roo Crew is the true definition of family saved; reunited. Rounded up the summer of 2025 and offered for adoption not long after. Canon City holding was closing and the BLM had to move fast. The goal; all Colorado horses were to find homes in just a few months, with a few different events. Making it even more stressful only one person from approved organizations could come to the prison and adopt the horses of their choice. Our land wasn't ready, and what we thought was going to happen didn't and all horses 10 and under needed to find homes.
So of course we had a list. No way we would ever get Roo, he's a beautiful bay roan and so many would want him for his looks alone. But as the story changed so did our list. Every day leading up to the prison pick up, something changed and we would find another. Finally we were told to give the tag numbers of the horses we were interested in, so we did. Because we always choose family we had Roo and Vuitton. We then picked Whirlwind, for she was the other older mare and we were gonna offer her sanctuary. We wanted to see how this group would do before we added a fourth, and knew we had another chance for Butterscotch in Grand Junction. Since we always try to honor the wishes of other organizations we were told the hope was for Whirlwind to be going with family out of state. Well of course she would, lol. So we scratched her off our list, and snuck in our final number; it was Tiffany.
Tiffany and I go way back, I have been photographing her for many years and it seemed fitting since her stallion was going to another organization who could only take the older horses. Our list was final, and off I went to pick up our new beautiful family. As soon as the two mares got off the trailer I knew they were pregnant, Tiffany was further along and foaled in November of 2025, and Vuitton waited until February 2026 to bring us her bundle of joy. If born in the holding facility they would have been lost forever.
Hooray, they are both fillies; Coco and Takoja.
We can't forget about Butterscotch, the young wild card who offers a wonderful balance. She joined Roo's Band shortly before the round up, but because she was so young we were hoping another might bid on her so they could have an amazing horse. We watched and waited, and with no other bids we brought her home.
While we can't offer them 40,000 acres, we did offer them safety; sanctuary. A family intact, preserved to the best of our ability, and the ensurance we will do our very best to keep it that way.
